FREEDOM.

Long time no post! Josephine and I have been working on our personal blogs, but we've sort of neglected this one...no more! It's winter break after the hardest semester of our college careers, and we're back and better than ever.

More posts to come...but for now I leave you with one word...

los angeles, i'm yours

perhaps one of the best concerts we've ever been to; watching the decemberists play with the los angeles philharmonic was amazing.

best friends.

this is me and my best friend, josephine. she's gorgeous and intelligent and she came all the way to berkeley to spend my 20th birthday with me and i love her more than words can describe. we've known each other since the sixth grade when we hated each other but became best friends in the eighth grade and have been bff ever since. she knows me better than anyone else and calls me on my shit and tells me when i'm being an annoying sap and makes fun of me when i do something silly and teases me when i get a crush on a boy. we quote bon qui qui and heathers and forgetting sarah marshall to each other, it's great. she's awesome, and i hope you all have a best friend half as amazing as she is.

this'll be us when we're old.

"I don't want to kill everyone, Tom. Just my enemies."

Al Pacino in The Godfather and the The Godfather II was one sexy, sexy man. He's definitely someone I'd like to visit if I had a time machine, mmmm.

texting...it's dangerous.

i mean, yeah, it's a hell of a lot more convenient than calling all the time, and quicker, but at the same time, it allows you to say things you wouldn't otherwise say, which is probably for the best. if you wouldn't say it out loud, don't text it!* it's another stupid thing you do when you're drunk, and it's annoying to have to worry about protecting your messages from being read by others. and worst of all, it's a distraction, especially when you have a two page paper due on media bias on the health care reform bill due the next day!!

i don't know. it's very much a love/hate relationship with my phone at the moment. more towards love since i'm away from everyone i care about, but goddamn, i hate not being able to disconnect myself for a minute.

*note to self: take your own advice

True Love

Malcolm Young... can I travel back in time and marry you? hm??

welcome to the winter of our discontent.

apologies to our lovely readers, we've both been going insane with school (if you think felicity had it bad, she had nothing on us!). we're both juniors in college and this is when things start to get a little crazy...you know, in preparation for the real world and all that jazz. on top of the mountains of reading that we both have in our perspective majors, it doesn't help that the college football season starts tomorrow as well...basically, our only time to leave our apartments and talk to people other than our roommates, providing an excellent excuse to put off that reading you didn't want to do. there's boy drama and friend issues, as always, and it's just been really hectic.

anyways, we'd like to take the time to ask what you like on here, and what you'd like to see! more witty commentary? fashion? movie clips? west wing references? you ask, we'll see what we can do to make you happy.

hope you all are doing well!

go bears!

As the lovely Josephine pointed out, I've moved away from our beloved Los Angeles to Berkeley. Why? I have a list!

1. Best school ever. I'm biased, obviously, but really, ranked #1 public school in the country! It's been my dream school, since I was about twelve, very happy to finally be here. If you want to read about my adventures at Cal, go here :)
2. The weather: it's not always hot! It gets chilly here. Like, you can FEEL the seasons. Not only is it nice being able to differentiate summer from fall, but it's an excuse to buy awesome sweaters, coats, boots, scarves, gloves, hats...an excuse to shop for a whole new wardrobe, basically.
3. The food. I'm not half as big of a foodie as Josephine, but even I appreciate how amazing all the restaurants are up here. I can't wait to try all these new places; I'm a picky eater but I want to expand my horizons. Still, I can't help but reverting to my comfort foods--last night my friend Alex and I went to a Jewish deli, Saul's, and had the BEST matzo ball soup and latke of my LIFE. Sorry Mom, this was just mind-blowingly good.
4. We're "official" rivals with Stanford. I hate Stanford, they have a fucking TREE as their mascot. No thanks, GO BEARS!
5. Fifteen minutes away from San Francisco/amazing food/good friends/concerts!! I really want to go see the Decemberists in October.
6. THE BOYS ARE SO CUTE. Sooooooo cute. So much better (than most) boys at home. Though there is one at home that I do miss!
7. Getting to start over; our hometown was one where everyone knew everything about everyone...which is definitely as annoying as it sounds.
8. Walking. In LA, you can't really walk anywhere, you have to drive. I hate driving with a passion, it's so stressful! I love that you can walk anywhere here, or if you're feeling lazy, take a bus (they actually have an efficient bus system!!!) or the BART.
9. Not living at home. Pretty sure this is self-explanatory :)
10. And finally (for now), growing up. I'm learning how to be self-dependent, and how to survive on my own.

Here is a dancing bear for your time:

xo!

Instant Gratification Takes Too Long

Oops, Blog neglect :/

ADD post ahead -

I've been over here
Andrea has been in Mexico (lucky!) until yesterday, although now she is gone AGAIN to Berkeley forever (sort of). So, I am wishing her the best of luck and counting down until I get to go visit (so she can show me all the good shopping up there).

We saw the Gin Blossoms perform last night, which was awesome!

Here's a picture of Buster:

Here's a sort of related picture :)

"Sometimes it's right to do the wrong thing, and right now is one of those times."

Some of my favorite quotes:

"I got mad love for you, shorty. That's on the real. I like
— I wanna like listen to Boyz II Men when I'm with you."--Luke Shapiro

"
Certain people you just can't trust, you know Luke? Never trust anyone who doesn't smoke pot or listen to Dylan. Never trust anyone who doesn't like the beach. Never, EVER, EVER trust anyone who says they don't like dogs! You meet someone who doesn't like dogs you alert the authorities IMMEDIATELY and you sure as SHIT don't MARRY THEM" --Dr. Squires

***

One of the best independent movies I've seen in a long time, I definitely recommend checking it out (note for the lazy: it's on Instant Watch on Netflix!).

Oh Snap

I need a disposable camera. I decided it's fun and easier, since there's no screen to look at and have people say "ew my nose looks gross in that picture, redo!"
No thanks.

venice beach!

going to the beach for the first time this summer...epic fail. i have a month left in southern california, i should try to experience the ~socal scene before i leave and start saying "hella" all the time.

Lemmy: The Movie

1) I didn't know Lemmy: The Movie existed until a few days ago, which is crazy awesome and I need to Netflix that shit.
2) Do you realize how many women are rumored to have slept with this dude? Over a 1,000. Easily. Isn't it insane how an instrument will persuade chicks to fuck an ugly guy? That would make an interesting anthropologic study.

the holiday

"I've found almost everything ever written about love to be true. Shakespeare said "Journeys end in lovers meeting." What an extraordinary thought. Personally, I have not experienced anything remotely close to that, but I am more than willing to believe Shakespeare had. I suppose I think about love more than anyone really should. I am constantly amazed by its sheer power to alter and define our lives. It was Shakespeare who also said "love is blind". Now that is something I know to be true. For some quite inexplicably, love fades; for others love is simply lost. But then of course love can also be found, even if just for the night. And then, there's another kind of love: the cruelest kind. The one that almost kills its victims. Its called unrequited love. Of that I am an expert. Most love stories are about people who fall in love with each other. But what about the rest of us? What about our stories, those of us who fall in love alone? We are the victims of the one sided affair. We are the cursed of the loved ones. We are the unloved ones, the walking wounded. The handicapped without the advantage of a great parking space!"

I'm not going to lie, I unabashedly adore this movie and cannot watch it without feeling better by the end. Add a couple of white cheddar rice cakes, and you've got the perfect night in.

Giving Up On Dreams

I just realized how ridiculous it would be for me, as an Environmental Science major, to have dreads. I'm pretty Anglo. How ridic? I'm not trying to look like a Rasta McFarian poseur over here. sheesh.

On another note, how awesome is this album cover? Pretty awesome, that's how. Currently developing mental plans to emulate this coif and outfit (without looking frumpy - after all, I'm not freaking Diana Ross people), ASAP.

21, For All Intents and Purposes

Last night at the Echo... 50-cent Haircut and American Primitive. Both played excellent music. The first guys were all decked out in suspenders and waistcoats and such, which is always fun to see. And the guys in American Primitive were just good-looking, period. It was fun, I'll have to make it over there again on a Sunday - all ages ;)

An old performance by 50-cent Haircut (not in full throwback dress, but oh well) playing Elliot Smith Blues

OMGZ

At the risk of sounding like a broken record since Andrea already mentioned this...

But, seriously, though. I was re-watching the trailers, re-reading the book, etc.

I. AM. FREAKING. OUT.
so excited!

Destroy My Sweater

I realize I am months late in hopping on along with this Raquel Allegra-inspired trend, but I had been rather occupied last semester getting my A in Environmental Law.

As a perpetual crafter, my room is littered with (mostly unfinished) DIYs and, as an avid knitter, in my opinion there can be no greater and liberating joy found than in destroying knitwear. So, last night plopped myself down in front of Conan O'Brien and took to a sort of big and unflattering AA shirt I never wore anyway. Here's my progress so far:

Just starting out

Almost done with the first panel

Crappy close up on my camera (I couldn't use flash since the shirt's white, so they were all coming out blurry)

I liked how the hem looked where I ripped out the seam - a little bit like perforated paper

First panel finished - it starts in the back but is sort of diagonal and goes up to my armpit

This project is pretty fun and therapeutic. Kind of relaxing to do in front of my Netflix Instant Play Beverly Hills: 90210, so at the risk of looking like I was on the losing end of a fight with Nancy Spungen, I think I'll continue with this... Maybe it'll make a good 4th of July outfit addition?

i solemnly swear i am up to no good.

this is a potter summer.
harry potter and the half-blood prince is finally coming out, after a huge delay that infuriated fans, myself and josephine included. but whatever, it's coming, and we couldn't be more excited! re-reading the books (currently on goblet of fire), rewatching the movies (currently on prisoner of azkaban)...it's like reliving my childhood. anywho, here's the official movie trailer for half-blood prince...it's bound to be amazing!

You Can Get It If You Really Want It

Swimming with long hair is such a pain in the ass. Long hair is kind of annoying in general, though, but I look awful with a short hairstyle, so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. If (that being a very big if) I had guts I would totally want to do dreadlocks like these:

THIS and THIS are two of my favorites (but I can't post because of the rights being reserved, etc, etc). Annie Butterfly's entire Flickr is worth examining, but her Dreadie Adventure is especially interesting and informative. I especially love her dread shots after she got new extensions put in toward the end... really beautiful!

Lisa Bonet with some good hair, too.

I seem to really like them in a ponytail/pulled back/up, which is weird considering I am a no maintenance hairdo kinda girl, but they look so cool!

I Only Want You For Your Swatch...

I'm regressing back to my non-JC Chasez fourth grade crush: Sam Anders, of Clarissa Explains It All fame. That's what TV on DVD will do to a girl in the summer, I suppose.

Plus, its nice knowing he'll almost certainly turn into this when he grows up:

See?

And, just because I want Dicky Barrett, too, but you can't win 'em all:

Bloodletting

Let it be known throughout the lands that I positively lurve to knit. So, naturally, I googled "avant garde knitting patterns" one day (I believe), and came up with this: It is a scarf knit with surgical tubing, which is then attached to the wearer. The persons blood pumps throughout the scarf, giving it its color. This is possibly the strangest, most disturbing, and absolutely, if you will, "bitchin'-est" thing I have ever seen in my life. Brought to you by mixed media artist Laura Splan. Definitely worth checking out her other projects if you like this kind of thing (ie if you are as morbid as I am).

Banksy vs. Bristol Museum

Awesome, as usual

Heathers

Blog name inspired by the totally 80s lingo popularized by the 1988 cult classic Heathers.

Mean Girls ain't got shit on Heathers!

"I think I want to bring back bitchin'..."

In our first effort toward "cheap and fun things to do this summer", this is how our collective time was spent yesterday:

(although, granted, ours were not nearly this complicated. actual pictures to follow)

Shout out to Michael's

Yesterday was destined to be a throwback day, anyway, though, since we saw Essence Atkins at Porto's when we went to (br/l)unch.

~Mission Statement~

j: ok so blog is up and running, waiting for content. joint inaugural post?

a: yes! sounds good. about what, though? should it be our ~mission statement~?

j: mission statement works for me, what should we say? eskimo? "I would like to say a few words. Here they are: Nitwit, Blubber, Oddment, Tweak! Thanks you!"

a: dumbledore makes me happy. but maybe what we aim to do with the blog? as in, inform the general public about our AWESOMENESS??

j: I don't *aim* to do anything with the blog except to post anything I motherfucking feel like posting! we should just post this. I'm doing it. Let me know if you have anything to add.

So, to summarize:
- eskimo
- nitwit, blubber, oddment, tweak
- we have copious amounts of AWESOMENESS!!

that is all.
